Saturated Buffer Locating a saturated buffer along or in a vegetated area made up of grasses, shrubs, and trees between the cropland field and the watercourse, reduces sediment and phosphorous carried by surface runoff and nitrates below surface from entering streams. Nitrate reductions of 50 to 90% are not uncommon. As the water flows through the buffer, both denitrification and uptake by the perennial plants in the buffer remove nitrates and improve the quality of water flowing into the streams
Bioreactor A bioreactor is a subsurface trench located along the edge of a field that is filled with a carbon source, most often woodchips. A water level control structure is used to divert field runoff through the trench to break down nitrate through denitrification processes converting it to nitrogen gas.
