St. Francis of Assisi
Feast: October 4th
The patron saint of Italy, Francis of Assisi, was a poor man who astounded and inspired the
Church by taking the gospel literally, not in a narrow fundamentalist sense, but by actually fol-
lowing all that Jesus said and did, joyfully, without limit, and without a sense of self-

Serious illness brought the young Francis to see the emptiness of his frolicking life in Assi-
si. Prayer, lengthy and difficult, led him to a self-emptying like that of Christ. From the cross
in the neglected field-chapel of San Damiano, Christ told him, “Francis, go out and build up
my house, for it is nearly falling down.” Francis became a totally poor and humble workman

He was, for a time, considered to be a religious fanatic, begging from door to door when he
could not get money for his work. A few people began to realize this man was actually trying
to be Christian. He really believed what Jesus said: “Announce the kingdom! Possess no gold or silver or copper in
your purses, no traveling bag, no sandals, no staff” (Luke 9:1-3)

Francis’ first rule for his followers was a collection of texts from the Gospels. He had no intention of founding an
order, but once it began he protected it and accepted all the legal structures needed to support it. His devotion and loyal-
ty to the Church were absolute and highly exemplary at a time when various movements of reform tended to break the
Church’s unity

Francis was torn between a life devoted entirely to prayer and a life of active preaching of the Good News. He de-
cided in favor of the latter, but always returned to solitude when he could. During the last years of his relatively short
life, he died at 44, Francis was half blind and seriously ill. Two years before his death he received the stigmata, the real
and painful wounds of Christ in his hands, feet and side

Hello! My name is Sabrina Valenza, and I have the privilege of being the new Middle
School Math teacher, as well as the fifth grade homeroom teacher this year! I am also the
sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Character Education teacher! I am thrilled, honored and ex-
cited to be joining the staff at St. Rocco School. A little about myself, I am originally from a
town on Long Island, New York called Commack. This is where I was born and raised. After
finishing high school on Long Island, at a school called St. Anthony’s High School, I then
had the privilege of attending four incredible years of college at Sacred Heart University in
Fairfield Connecticut. After graduating, my career had led me to this wonderful state that I now get to call home! I be-
gan my teaching career right after college and ever since, I have been able to follow my dreams. I have now been
blessed with the opportunity to teach and educate these wonderful children here at St. Rocco’s. I want to incorporate
many fun ways to help your children learn. To give everyone some information on the workload and expectation for
the school year, each class will have homework assignments Monday through Thursdays, and we will aim to have a
quiz a week. As for character education, we will be focusing on improving our understanding of the virtues and work-
ing on how to be kinder and more faithful Catholics in our societies. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year
this year and educating your children in something that I absolutely love, Math!

o PreK
We have had such a great start to our school year here in the Pre - Kindergarten 3 classroom
at St. Rocco School! The students have all been adjusting beautifully with each other, our
daily routines and all the wonderful teachers we have in our school. We have been learning
about how each of us is a special creation from God, unique in our own way, making the sign
of the cross, putting our praying hands on and learning the importance to stop and pray at
certain times of the day

In our classroom we have also been learning about the season of Autumn and all the beauti-
ful things it brings us such as apples, the change in the colors of leaves and change in weather. The students cannot get
enough of our Pete the Cat books that we read and sing along with as well as our morning songs at circle time

Sister Donna is also a wonderful asset to our classroom. I am so thankful for our beautiful friendship we have
created over the years. It makes for a remarkably successful and happy school year together with the students. She
shares her love for our Catholic Religion with our students each day and enjoys teaching the class our religion lessons
each week. This past week we read and talked about Noah's Ark and how God saved Noah, his family and 2 of each
animal from the flood

Both myself and Sister Donna are looking forward to spending the year with our wonderful students and guiding them
each day to grow and learn through kindness and faith!
r A Thon
n Event
On Thursday, September 8th was the official kick-off for our Color a thon event. There were
two assemblies in Café Rocco to inform and excite our students about this school-wide fundraising
event. Packets were sent home with all the information. Our school fundraising goal is $30,000. I
know that we can reach this goal. We are hoping for 100% participation. We are still looking for
business sponsors. It’s only $150.00 and your business logo goes on the Color A Thon website. If
you are interested contact the school office at 401-944-2993
