Our Genealogy and Local History collection is one of our largest services and consists of indexes, genealogies, state and county histories, family histories, city directories, atlases, land warranty maps, ship passenger lists, and compilations of church and cemetery records.
Where can i find information on my family history collection?
Some of these collections have been digitised and are available online on our Genealogy website; others involve in-depth archival research in person in the National Archives. Further information on undertaking archival research is available in Historical records.
Can i get help with genealogy research at the library?
State Library staff will assist with general research for patrons, however, staff will not conduct specific genealogical searching. View a list of professional genealogists that, for a fee, will provide researching services.
What are the best resources for genealogists and historians?
Items of interest to genealogists and historians often include the published Pennsylvania Archives series, regimental histories (primarily from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars), research guides for ethnic and minority groups, and guides to genealogical research in foreign countries.
