COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETINGVIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS200 N. Boulevard I Richmond, Virginia 23220-4007www.vmfa.museum/pressroom I T 804.204.2704FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEApril 26, 2016 Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic A mid-career retrospective of a prolific artist opens June 11An exhibition featuring portraits by one of the country’sleading contemporary artists will be on view June 11through September 5 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
Composed of more than 50 monumental paintings andsculptures, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic raises intriguingquestions about race, identity, and the politics ofrepresentation
Recognized for his portrayal of contemporary AfricanAmerican men using conventions of traditional Europeanportraiture, Wiley has expanded his vision to includewomen and cultures from around the globe. In addition tolesser-known early works, this exhibition also explores newdevelopments, which include bronze busts, “paintings” instained glass, and works from his World Stage series
“Kehinde Wiley is one of the most popular artists inAmerica today,” Director Alex Nyerges said. “The VirginiaMuseum of Fine Arts was one of the first comprehensive Kehinde Wiley (American), Willem vanart museums to acquire his portraits, and we are thrilled to Heythuysen, 2006. oil, enamel on canvas. Arthur and Margaret Glasgowpresent a larger selection of his work to the public. These Fund Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, paintings and sculptures challenge centuries of stereotypes, Richmondand we hope our visitors will feel engaged and make theconnection between Wiley’s works and those in our galleries.”Wiley selects the subjects for his portraits through the process of “street casting” by enlisting youngmen and women to pose for his paintings. These people, wearing hoodies, jeans, and baseball caps, are contrasted against ornate backgrounds that evoke an aristocratic style of portraiture. By replacingEuropean aristocrats with black subjects, Wiley points out the absence of African Americans fromsuch historical narratives
The works on view will include selections from his ongoing World Stage series, where Wiley’s workhas taken on a global perspective. In addition to establishing a studio in Beijing, China, Wiley hasspent time in Africa, France, Israel, Jamaica, Haiti, and other countries. Portraits of women from theAn Economy of Grace series include The Two Sisters, which was lent to the exhibition by VMFA Boardof Trustees President William A. Royall, Jr., and his wife, Pamela

The exhibition includes a selection of Wiley’s World Stage paintings, begun in 2006, in which he takes his street casting process to other countries, widening the scope of his collaboration. Though Kehinde Wiley is best known for his painted portraits, here he shifts from painting to sculpture. In both the lift and turn of the young man’s head and the open V of his zippered collar, this bronze refers to an eighteenth-century marble bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
